Dream Description

This is a film about Dream Description- Filmed by Sam Higgins, Matthew Trowell, Natalie-Joy Docker.
This brief was given to us on the 14th october by paul, and we had the choice to drop one of our other projects and hand this in with our 1st assignment. I felt it would be a lot easier to drop my film homage and hand this film in instead.
This was a one day project and we had 3 hours to film, 1 hour to edit, and an hour to get all our research together and plan what we were going to do.
Initially we were going to do a dream of mine, but we couldn't get the shots of what happened in my dream to show the re-inactment of it, because there were famous people and dead people etc...
So we decided to go with richard's idea of how he felt that he couldn't breathe and he was panicking around burton town.

Research for dream description video

Unfortunately i cannot find the dream group on vimeo, but i can remember the videos that we had watched before, so i am going to describe some of the video's that we had watched.
We watched the winning video of the weekend project which was a foreign girl who was describing her dream of how she was in a train station.
The film was not edited, in anyway and there wasn't any cut aways to re-inact the film.
It was also filmed in black and white and had subtitles so even english viewers could watch, she was also laid on her side and she was wearing a black top so it was easier to see the subtitles.

I felt that she could've filmed it a lot better by adding cutaways, for example she could've shot the train station because it would break up the interview and would've been a lot more interesting to the viewer, it was a sort of dream diary so maybe she didn't have enough time to film the rest of the footage.

i found her video enchanting because it was filmed in black and white, her foreign language added a magical touch too.

I feel that our film is a lot more descriptive and you actually see what Richard was dreaming about, because we had cut aways that mimicked his dream.
we also added music too, this added another dimension to our film.

I WILL FIND THE VIDEO SOON!

Understanding the media 1- Film homage Research

I have chosen to look at the wizard of oz for my film homage project, because in my opinion it is one of the most iconic films to date.
It has been voted 26 on Film Fours 100 greatest films of all time (filmsite.org accessed 2011).
Even if you have never watched this film, many people will know where it is from, even if it is mentioned in a conversation.
The most iconic bits of this scene, are the ruby red shoes and the wicked witch of the west, everybody associates the red shoes with the wizard of oz.

http://youtu.be/Yc13WSaiRMM
I have had to leave a link of THE most iconic scene. in this scene dorothy chants to herself a line that is known all over the world to people who love or hate this film 'theres no place like home' and taps her red shoes together.

if i was to film this scene, it would be quite easy to film in terms of it being simply filmed and edited, this scene also has a few actors in it too, so i wouldn't have to find that many people to act in this scene.

The film is a very vibrant, very colourful and uplifting, due to the use of technicolor. The wizard of oz wasn't the first film to be filmed in technicolor but it was one of the first to be released in this new 1930's technique (http://www.wizardofozonline.com/movie.html accessed 2011).

I have found a sort of film homage to the wizard of oz on youtube. It is about a girl who is trying find a college that 'feels like home'.

if you asked anybody who watched this short video what film it was they would automatically guess it was wizard of oz, you can tell this by: the dress, the plaits and the dog in the 1st shot. If the girl wasn't to wear any of these things or carry the dog with her you probably wouldn't have a clue what film it was from or if it was their own idea.

Later on in the video you also get to see other characters from the wizard of oz but not in a full costume like dorothy is. the scarecrow only wears a straw hat, because you instantly recognise the straw hat with that character, the tin man has a sauce pan on his head and the lion has big hair and a nose painted on.
You associate the characters with the wizard of oz even in the most simplest of ways.

If i was to make a homage to Wizard of oz, i would have to base it around the ruby red slippers because the majority of people would recognise them from this film.
it would be quite easy to film as well, i will keep the shots simple and come up with a background story that is similar to the wizard of oz.

Donnie Darko- Opening sequence

I have chosen to also look at Donnie Darko too, i find this is one of the most iconic films ever that has had a large cult following since its release in 2001.
It has been voted one of the best films of all time by Total Film (TotalFilm.com Accessed 2011). With the all star cast of hollywood actors such as, Jake Gyllenhaal, Drew Barrymore, Patrick Swayze etc this film was bound to reach to a great hight in the best films ever made.
I have chosen this 1st scene to look at because i find it to be an iconic scene in itself. Donnie riding his bike home, and it introduces his family members, his dad is blowing the leaves, his sister walks past the dad, his other sister is on the trampoline and his mom is sitting in the chair reading a book.
I found this was a good way of introducing his family members, automatically you know that this is donnie's family.
The scene where donnie is riding his bike seems such a carefree scene, the music also makes the scene flow too, i would describe it as the 'calm before the storm'.
I would like to make a film homage to Donnie Darko because i think that people would recognise the scene from these key factors- donnie riding his bike, the music, and his dad blowing the leaves towards the sister in the garden.

If i was to film this scene, it would be quite a difficult scene to film due to whilst Donnie is riding his bike, the camera shit follows him, this obviously shows that the camera is on a track- or if i was to film it, i would need to use a car to film somebody on a bike.
i would also need to have quite a few actors for the family. For the time i have left to film maybe this would be a bit silly to film.
Maybe this scene is memorable from Donnie Darko to me, because it is such a beautiful scene, the music fits it just right too 'the killing moon' echo and the bunnymen. Donnie darko was set in 1988 (filmcritic accessed 2011) and Echo and the bunnymen released the song Killing moon in 1984 (songfacts acessed 2011). This also ties the 80s time period together.

Misery

I have also chosen misery to look at too, this film is an adaptation of the stephen king novel. This film has also been voted one of the best films of the 90's- it came 36. (dj-funktual accessed 2011). This film is gruesome and spine chillingly eerie as annie wilkes 'saves' her favourite author from a car accident, he wasn't to know her kindness will turn into an obsessive, controlling nightmare!

If i was to film this scene, i would have to think about the actors, i would only need two actors, but i would have to bear in mind that people might not know which film it was from straight away, even though misery was voted one of the best films from the 90's, not many people know about it.
In terms of filming though, it would be extremely easy to film, simple shots and only a few actors- but as i said, im worried that not many people would recognise this film.

One Question Research.

This video seems as if it is going to be quite easy going , you get to hear peoples deepest secrets- a bit of lighthearted fun, but it turns out to be a lot more deeper than that, a poignant, emotional film that pulls at your heart strings- maybe the director knew it was going to turn out this way or maybe it took him by surprise, if so they have produced an extremely well thought out film and have chosen some interesting characters to answer the question, 'what is your secret?'
The answers didn't seem as if they were planned, it looked as if some of the people were taken back by the question, took a bit of time to think of the answer, and even some people didn't way to answer it because they thought what was the point in telling somebody the secret if it will not remain a secret, this suggests the camera was turned on and then the people were asked.
Also there were a lot of fast zooms in the footage, was this done on purpose to get an effect of it not being a staged interview? or was it done by mistake? it could've added a bit of quirkiness to the film too.

Fifty People, One Question: London from Fifty People, One Question on Vimeo.

I didn't really like this video due to the long intro, i felt as if it was extremely unnecessary, but that is probably just me. I didn't think the music did it much justice either, i realise it is a very poignant question but i didn't think that the music fit, i feel asif it could have had an uplifting song, but then again the 1st person that was interviewed did take his time to answer the question and felt as if his answer was silly and that probably he would be laughed at for saying it, so the music most certainly ties in with his answer.

The way that this production was filmed was quite messy i feel, alot of zooms and i feel that the harmonica playing at the end was completely out of context. I also feel that the music could've been alot upbeat for the question that was asked.

when i come to film my one question, i want to make it as upbeat as possible with a hint of comedy in it, plus serious answers obviously.
I just want people to go away and think, what do i really love, i wanted it to have a lasting effect on the people that we interviewed.

I want the interviews to be on the spot, so i wont tell the the question that ill be asking before the tape is rolling, i feel that this is best because then they wont have time to think about it and then they'll go away and think about it.

In the documentary above, they have done the same thing, they haven't told them the question before the camera is rolling because people really have to think about what they love, with the 'errrms and errs' included.
I like this way of filming, because it is extremely natural, take for example the guy the asked 1st on the one question, he took around 30 seconds to think of an answer and when he finally thought of it, he thought it was a stupid answer, these are real emotions that we are seeing and they aren't staged.
